Couple of updates

I have more to post but this is it for right now. My vain atempt to protect my plants from insects and birds. Since I have been feeding the birds they have also been dining on my plants. This mosquito netting I thought would work to stop the birds since they go right through the bird netting. Also maybe it will stop the cabbage moths. Since I did this though I have learned of a cool product from farmtek that is a screening that is very fine but lets the light in.

Also below is my second attempt at the as seen on TV upside down tomato plant gimmick. I call it at gimmick at the moment because I don’t really see why it should work any better than tomatoes straight in the ground. I tried it before but didn’t have an adequate holder for it. Now they sold it with it’s own stand and it tucks neatly in my garden area. That part of it I like. I have Roma grape tomato, big boy & husky cherry red so I will try and post updates on it’s progress though out the season.

The reason I need bird netting

I just got a GlowPanel

picture of panelI can’t wait to put this thing up over my little light starved seedlings. This thing looks a little more like a disco party light than something innocent little plants would enjoy let alone thrive from. Non-the-less I really like the idea that this LED panel put out virtually no heat and uses 80% less electricity. Now if it actually makes my plants grow it will be just too good to be true! *UPDATE*

I’ve used this for several weeks now and I have to say it’s hard to evaluate. It doesn’t produce enough light to cover the whole seed tray and I have to get the light really close to the seeds. Even though it doesn’t put out that much heat when you are practically touching the seed with the light it will dry it out in a spot. So it’s not even. Perhaps if I spent more money I would have a better product. As it is it may be OK to add to light coming through the window but it needs to be more powerful to work on it’s own.

New Life

I have another blog that I started for the new year called a PAD (Photo a Day). It’s an exercise in trying to get myself to think photographically every day. Today I captured my little seedlings that just started to emerge. They are straining a bit to get the light so I ordered a new light for them since it’s so cloudy, dark and cold for them right now. I have been reading about LED lights that emit little hit, save energy and can give the spectrum they need to supplement this winter. We will see!

This link is a photo of various different tomato varieties that are just beginning to sprout.

Google apps

I think with all of google advancements it’s going to make it easier for me to keep track of what I am doing in my garden and what I need to do. I was trying to use this blog to do this but it’s only good for some things and not others. I added a tab at the top that is an embedded google calendar. What is great about google of course is that it’s searchable. The other cool thing is that when I put an event in I can have it send me an email to remind me I need to do something. So my idea is that I will put in the frost dates and when I need to plant what and then forget about it until it’s time and the calender will tell me. That is the hope anyway.

The other tab is a spreadsheet in google docs of what is planted where in the garden and maybe a note about that containers so I can keep track of what is where. One of these days I will have it perfect! 🙂

ALERT: If you are Safari user on a Mac or an iPhone and have a google account you can not see this calendar embedded within a page. Even if you are the owner of the account you can’t see it until you log out out of all google app accounts. It’s a known bug with Safari that I really wish Apple would fix. I would like to be able to update these from my iPhone. Since there are so many iPhone users I am sure they will get to it someday!
