Double duty bokashi composting

I have share a little garden update success. I’ve been doing bokashi composting (rapid composting) for a little while now and developed a routine that I thought I would share.

Bokashi is a method of composting that is basically fermenting kitchen waste with a mixture called EM-1 and then burying it in the ground to finish the composting cycle in about 28 days. It can vary of course according to the weather – in winter it takes longer than in the Summer but it’s safe to say when digging the soil back up after 28 days most of the kitchen material will be gone and you’ll have rich black fluffy soil in its place. (read an article about bokashi here).

The advice is to dig a trench in the backyard and bury it at least 8 inches deep after it has fermented. The deeper the better and given  I have birds and thick heavy clay soil I opted for another way of doing it.

New Life

I have another blog that I started for the new year called a PAD (Photo a Day). It’s an exercise in trying to get myself to think photographically every day. Today I captured my little seedlings that just started to emerge. They are straining a bit to get the light so I ordered a new light for them since it’s so cloudy, dark and cold for them right now. I have been reading about LED lights that emit little hit, save energy and can give the spectrum they need to supplement this winter. We will see!

This link is a photo of various different tomato varieties that are just beginning to sprout.

Happy to see my little babies sprouting!!! I  have 100 percent germination. The next picture is of the same trees but they are only three years old. You can see horse pens in the background to give a sense of scale. I have read many articles of people who are against these trees for a myriad of reasons and I don’t subscribe to any of it. This is a wonderful tree providing privacy, shade, love of nature with the wind its leave and a wonderful sent. I have read they are trying to eradicate these trees in the parks along the coast which makes me want to plant these trees all the more.
