I have an oak!

I just discovered a volunteer oak in my garden! It’s growing in an old raised plant bed I had which would be the perfect spot for an oak except I have chicken wire underneath to stop the gophers coming from underneath. I am afraid that if I let it be the roots will get strangled by this and it will kill tree. However if I dig it up to transplant it I will kill it as well. Hard to know the right thing to do!?

Happy to see my little babies sprouting!!! I  have 100 percent germination. The next picture is of the same trees but they are only three years old. You can see horse pens in the background to give a sense of scale. I have read many articles of people who are against these trees for a myriad of reasons and I don’t subscribe to any of it. This is a wonderful tree providing privacy, shade, love of nature with the wind its leave and a wonderful sent. I have read they are trying to eradicate these trees in the parks along the coast which makes me want to plant these trees all the more.

My parents 40th wedding anniversary was yesterday and to create something romantic for them I thought I would give them a custom dinner for two in my garden. That meant a little clean up and a little planning. My laptop with a slideshow and a music playlist from 1969 was a help (click here for the list of song from 1969). Along with many candles and the soft gurgle sound from my fountain made the setting special. The weather even cooperated by waiting a few minutes to downpour until after the dinner celebration was done. It was nice to have someone else enjoy my place for a little bit. It made it all the more special.
