Garden maintenance

Things I did this morning

  • Started to write this post to say what I did and then the browser froze and I lost it all. GRRR. Will try again
  • Rerouted the electricity in my garden so that my veggie garden lights can be turned on independently from everything else to save on electricity.
  • Weed wacked my lawn. I need to fertilize it and get more water to it. I can’t wait to have a new lawn. Need to investigate solarization to get rid of the bermuda grass and start fresh
  • My watercress is sprouting! Seems that something else is too along side it. I am not sure what that is so I need to weed it. Never had watercress before. Here is a link back to when I started it and what it might be used for
  • I planted leeks. I got it in a bundle from Home Depot so I soaked them to seperate and then planted them in dug out area so I can build them up later to blanch. Here is a link to why it seem like a good idea to plant them http://www.ehow.com/how_9869_grow-leeks.html
  • I have patty pan summer squash that seems to be setting. I am very excited about that because it’s my favorite kind of squash. The leaves look good. I have had trouble in the past growing it but hopefully this new setup will work.
  • It was above 90 outside and the sunflowers have really started to take off. They were reaching the bird netting so I took it off. I thinned them some but need to thin more. They were planted too close together.Hopefully they are not too week.
  • Changed 2/3rds of my pond water and put two tablets of amonia clear in. The water is very cloudy and I still have not seen any fish. The water plants are growing better than in the past but they suffer from the brown leaf spot that everything else does and even in the water are attacked by earwigs.
  • I have some pomogranite flowers – yippee!
  • The chamomile and spiderwort look pretty together but the plants themselves are a bit leggy. I think they need more sun.
  • The tomato in the hanging basket is the same variety and was planted at the same time as the one in the big bin. Obviously it likes the big bin better judging by how big it is. Curious as to which produces the better fruit. The one in the basket looks healthy too but small.
  • I bought a Stewart Avocado last week and planted it. It was the only one in the store from home depot and I was worried about how the leaves seem to be curled. There is supposed to be a year garuntee on all plants from Home Depot but I know I will never find my receipt. They seem to cost half of what they are listed elsewhere and since they said this was a good variety for containers I thought  I would give it a shot. I didn’t know until I got it home that they are actually poisonous to animals if they eat the leaves and bark. So I planted it far back in the house in case a horse were every to get it’s head in.
