When I walked the dog in the evening and saw a strange glow in the west I knew it was bad.
I immediately headed over to the Marsh Creek Reservoir where I knew the reflection in the water would be good. I wasn’t alone as many other photographers knew it would be as well.

It reminded me of a volcano with flowing lava!
Wow! This came out great! I saw the fire as we were landing in SFO this evening and I was hoping someone would have a great shot of it! Nicely done!
This is terrible! Wan’t Mt Diablo a natural area! Looks the whole mountain will burn. Do they know the cause yet? You chose a good place for the picture.

I really like how you overexposed the foreground to get detail in it. It was so dark!
Actually I did the opposite. I did lighten the photo overall to bring out detail but not by much since it was a 13 second exposure it came out pretty bright anyway. This actually was about the last photo I took before I left and I knew I got a good one because the fire on the left just suddenly got bright and I was at the perfect angle to catch the reflection in the water. It really light it up after that. So I actually toned down the foreground some since it overpowered the mountain. I didn’t see any glow tonight – was all just thick smoulder – a lot of fumes but no drama.

As my naturalist son pointed out, this is not a tragedy for the mountain. It will be fine. Watch for great wildflower blooms next spring. It appears no one lost their house, and there were no injuries, which is wonderful news.
Amazing no one was hurt actually – those fire fighters are incredible. I saw a shot of them rushing up that steep mountain trying to make a fire break. I just don’t see how it’s humanly possible. Yes I hope the flowers are nice but I do feel sad when an oak dies.
