Los Vaqueros north entrance opening

Los Vaqueros has been closed for over a year due to an expansion project of the dam. They opened the park up for one day of free admission and festivities. Below is a few snapshots of the day.

Red tailed hawk take off

Tarantula hawk
Looking up at a mighty blue oak
Ohlone Indian showing the craft of sifting mashed acorns to make acorn flower
Closeup of a soaproot brush used by the indians to sweep acorn flour remnants from the baskets
The soaproot bulb used to make the glue for the handle
Ohlone indian demonstration how to make twine cordage from the California native dogbane or Indian hemp. Stronger than cotton cordage.
Not sure of the type of oak here but I loved the cast shadow it made in the noon day sun against the hill.

Wonderful captures, Eloine. That tarantula hawk is stunning – in more ways than one.

A lot of fine and interesting pics.
The demonstration of twine cordage reminds me of the artisanal production in the village were I was born.In the 19th and beginning of the 20th century they had a system basically with a handwheel and labourers(children) walking back to twist the hemp.
